A common cause is a brake rotor with uneven thickness or a surface that has developed excessive runout. As the brake pads grip, that uneven surface can push back through the steering wheel.

Drivers sometimes call this a warped rotor, although the underlying issue can vary. Heavy braking, overheating, corrosion, worn components, or incorrect wheel installation can all contribute. The important part is the pattern: vibration that starts mainly under braking should be inspected as a brake concern, not dismissed as a simple balance issue.

Do not wait if braking vibration comes with a soft pedal, grinding, a burning smell, a warning light, the vehicle pulling to one side, or noticeably weaker stopping power. Those symptoms can affect your ability to stop safely.
